A silk shoe belonging to Marie-Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution, was sold at an auction held at the Chateau de Versailles on Sunday 15 November 2020.

This rare and historic piece of French history was sold for 43,750 Euros, (US$51,780). The slipper, made of kidskin leather and silk, is a European size 36. The heel of the shoe is engraved with Marie-Antoinette’s name. According to Jean-Pierre Osenat, of the Osenat auction house, it is believed that this shoe was worn regularly by the Queen during her daily life at the Château de Versailles.Marie-Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI, was known for her lavish life style. She was executed by guillotine in 1793, during the French Revolution.During the chaotic period of the French revolution, the shoe ended up in the possession of Marie-Emilie Leschevin de Prévoisin, who was a close friend of Madame Campan, Marie-Antoinette’s first chambermaid.

The shoe, had been treasured in the family for the past 200 years.
